Junior High Math
Maternity B.V.M offers four different levels of math classes for junior high students. Each grade is split into 2 groups, so each math class is small enough to receive much individual attention. 7th grade students have the opportunity to take Pre-Algebra and 8th grade students have the opportunity to take Algebra. These opportunities give the students additional advantages for success in high school.
Due to small class sizes, the students are able to participate in a wide variety of activities and projects in the classroom. A favorite activity of the students is the use of mini whiteboards to practice doing math problems as a class. They also enjoy the creation of blueprint designs to practice area and perimeter and geoboards and graphing whiteboards to calculate slope. Playing Jeopardy to review for tests is also an exciting activity for the students.
A great addition to our math classes have been the use of laptop computers, both for teachers and students. For teaching, the laptop is a wonderful tool for displaying notes and other visual information. The students are then able to use their laptops to pull up the notes for each class session and refer to them while completing homework or use them to review for tests and quizzes.
