Catholic Identity

The Kindergarten student shall develop a concept of God and prayer by:

  • learning that God is the creator of all things, including all of us and recognizing that we are each unique and special creations of God.
  • learning that God wants  us to be happy and understanding of the “ Golden Rule”.
  • learning  that prayer is important and that prayer, even spontaneous prayer, is talking to and listening to God.
  • learning the continued importance of daily prayer, praying for others, prayer before and after meals and praying for special intentions.
  • learning and recognizing that Mary is the Mother of Jesus, thus the mother of us all.
  • learning and reciting traditional Catholic prayers, such as the Lord’s Prayer, the Hail Mary, the Glory Be, Guardian Angel and the Mealtime Prayer.
  • learning that the readings we hear at mass come from the Bible and that they are about the life of Jesus.

 

To develop an awareness of the wonder of learning and the wonders of “God’s Creation” in a Catholic Environment

  • to assist children in developing a positive self-image.
  • to encourage  social and emotional growth.
  • to foster independence and self-confidence.
  • to encourage cooperation within a group.
  • to guide large and small motor skills.
  • to provide opportunities to learn through discovery and exploration using hands-on activities.
  • to develop the ability to communicate effectively through listening and speaking
  • to nurture creativity and self-expression

 

Cognitive Development

The child shall acquire learning and problem solving skills by:

  • asking and responding appropriately to questions.
  • observing and making discoveries.
  • applying prior experiences to a new subject.
  • using creativity and imagination
  • comparing and classifying.
  • patterns and sequences.

 

Language Arts

 

Language Development

The student will demonstrate appropriate language development skills through:

  • the expression of thought out ideas.
  • the expression of their ideas in class discussions.
  • the use of adequate age-appropriate vocabulary.
  • listening attentively and asking appropriate questions

Reading

The student will demonstrate reading readiness to reading skills through:

  • letter recognition and the recitation of letters.
  • the use of phonics and knowing the relationship between the letter and the letter sound.
  • the showing of an interest in reading activities.
  • the knowledge and usage of high frequency words.

 

Writing Readiness

The child shall demonstrate writing skills through:

  • writing both the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet.
  • printing their own name.
  • writing their thoughts in a sentence.
  • using punctuation

 

Mathematics

The students shall demonstrate math skills through:

  • the association of numerals with sets.
  • the recognition of basic geometric shapes.
  • the classifying and sorting of objects.
  • the recognition and extension of patterns.
  • counting in sequence to 100.
  • identification of numerals to 100.
  • printing numerals
  • introduction to tellingtime by the hour on analog and digtal clocks
  • recognition of coins and their values
  • introduction of addition and subtraction

 

Social Studies

The following social studies skills will be demonstrated:

  • An awareness of a community and some of the basic functions of a community.
  • Identifying and describing how people’s needs are met.

 

Science

The students will demonstrate the following Science skills:

  • Problem solving skills through observation and questioning.
  • The demonstration of an awareness of concepts related to living things and the environment.

 

Physical Development

The child’s gross and fine motor skills shall be developed through various activities, such as:

  • hopping skipping and jumping
  • throwing and catching
  • balancing
  • cutting and pasting

 

The child’s creative expression and self-expression shall be developed through activities, such as:

  • drawing and painting
  • music
  • dance/movement
  • organized play

 

Social Development

The child shall develop social and emotional stability through:

  • listening attentively and following directions.
  • learning to follow school and classroom rules and accepting consequences.
  • respecting and cooperating with others.
  • exhibiting self-control.
