Junior Leagues recognizes volunteers: MBVM '05 Grad Among Honorees

Youth: Gab Carranza

NOMINATED BY MATERNITY
BVM YOUTH GROUP

Gab Carranza has given thousands of hours to church, school, and national volunteer projects. A senior at Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School, she has been an active volunteer since the sixth grade.

Described as a magnet, Carranza frequently brings others along with her to do service work. From encouraging her friends to go with her to area nursing homes to play bingo to convincing her family to spend their Christmas vacation building homes with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans, where Gab goes others follow. She has also recruited many people to join the Maternity BVM Youth Group and assists with its liturgy, service, prayer, and social events.

Carranza has been a part of work groups assisting the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina, a Mohawk Indian Reservation in New York, residents of New Orleans' Ninth Ward, and families in Biloxi, Mississippi. She also participates in local efforts to work for and feed the poor among us in Kankakee County.

INAUGURATION DAY 2009

Everyone at Maternity BVM tuned in to see history made.  After months of studying the primaries, the election and the transition period process, students watched the inauguration live from the classrooms.  Teachers helped narrate the historic event with the use of their SmartBoards which helped them bring extra information and historical notes to the presentation.  They even zoomed in on Google Earth to see the record numbers that attended and looked up answers to questions they had as the day unfolded.
