Oral Presentation
NOTE CARD INFORMATION
When you present your project information to the judges:
1) Your presentation should be 7-10 minutes long (NO longer than 10 minutes!)
PRACTICE AND TIME YOURSELF
Speak slowly (SLOWER THAN YOU THINK YOU SHOULD!)
2) SMILE!! You are the expert! Be Bold, but polite!
3) Using emotion and showing you are interested in your topic is essential!!
4) You want to “Sell” your Project to the judges.
They are interested in what you have to say – share details!!
POINT TO YOUR BACKBOARD/Use POWER POINT to SHARE DETAILS!!
5) Your Note cards are a reference – PRACTICE MAKING EYE CONTACT
They are impressed when you TALK to them (not to your cards)
Make the following Notecards, IN ORDER:
("Cut and paste” from your computer –you don’t have to write everything by hand)
Card #1 Introduction -
Introduce yourself, “Hi, my name is ______, I am in __ grade and attend ___ school.
This is my ____ year participating in Science Fair.”
Card #2 Acknowledgements
Thank the people who have helped you with your Project(partners, parents, teachers, librarians, etc.)
Card #3 Purpose - Explain WHY you were doing this experiment (I wanted to learn about….
Card #4 Hypothesis - Explain your PREDICTION about the OUTCOME of the experiment.
Cards #5 Review of Literature (Background Information)
a. This should include the SCIENCE that explains what happened in your experiment.(Summarize)
b. You DO NOT talk about your experiment at this point. This is BACKGROUND information only.
Cards #6 Materials and Procedure
a. Introduce the experiment by talking about the SAFETY measures you took
b. List all the materials used in the experiment
c. Explain the CONTROLS used in your experiment and WHY they are important
d. Explain the VARIABLES used in your experiment and WHY they were used
1) Explain the Independent Variable
2) Explain the Dependent Variable
3) Explain other Variables
e. List the STEP-BY-STEP Procedure you used in your experiment
f. Finish this section by pointing out any pictures or diagrams on your backboard that
were taken or used during the experiment
(Remember to stand to the side of your backboard/power point and LOOK at the judges as you are pointing out the information – DO NOT TALK facing your backboard/power point!)
Cards #7 Results of Experiment
a. Explain the results of your experiment using METRIC measurement information
b. Point to ALL tables, graphs, and pictures on your backboard (Stand to side/look at judges)
Cards #8 Conclusion:
a. State the conclusion you reached from YOUR TESTING ONLY. Make sure you refer BACK TO YOUR ORIGINAL HYPOTHESIS!
Card #9 Future Plans – Tell the judges how you would IMPROVE this experiment.
Card #10 Questions – Ask the judges if they have any questions.
a. If you’re not sure about the answer, tell them. You might say, “That is an interesting question, I think……”
b. If you don’t know the answer, tell them. You might say, “That is a great question, I will do additional research on that.”
c. If they give you suggestions on how to improve your experiment, make sure to tell them “THANK YOU.”
