Review of Literature - Organization and Order

The Review of Literature is written as a "science" report.  This report is written using the research information you gathered. (the books, websites, magazines, etc.)

The research explains the "scientific principles" that can be observed in your experiment.  THIS REPORT IS NOT ABOUT YOUR EXPERIMENT.  You will discuss your experiment in the "Results" and "Conclusion" sections of your report

A well written report begins with ORGANIZATION.  You will need a  MINIMUM of 3 main topics for your report.  For example:

  1. Develop an Outline of your Main Science Concepts

              I.  Introduction  Paragraph

                  A.  Introduction Sentence.

                  B.   Science Topic #1 Introduction

                  C.  Science Topic #2 Introduction

                  D.  Science Topic #3 Introduction

                  E.  Science Topic #4 - ? Introduction (more if needed for your report)

                  F.  Conclusion Sentence

           II.  Body of Paper Information

                  A.  Science Topic #1 - Detailed paragraph

                  B.  Science Topic #2 - Detailed paragraph

                  C.  Science Topic #3 - Detailed paragraph

                   D.  Science Topic #4 - Detailed paragraph

                  E.  Additional paragraphs (if needed for your report)

         III.  Conclusion Paragraph

                   A.  Conclusion information - explain what you learned

                   B.  Give examples of how information can be used

                   C.  Give ideas on why this information is important



2.   Use Outline as a guide to write the "Review of Literature" paper.

Your paper should be organized as follows:

I. First Paragraph is an INTRODUCTION to your topic 

          This paragraph lets the reader know what you are going to teach them.

          This paragraph should include:

         A.  A sentence or story to grab the reader’s attention.

         B.   Introductory information – about each of the main topics.

         C.  Scientific terms used to help teach new information.

II.  EACH Paragraph in the body of the paper gives DETAILS that explain information about the main topics. 

  1. Details from your references (books, internet, etc.)
  2. Explains information about the topic like you are teaching someone who has no background knowledge.
  3. Uses scientific definitions from the references.
  4. Keeps the reader interested by using examples on how the information can be used.
  5. Organization of each paragraph should include:
    1. First sentence should catch the reader’s attention
    2. Next sentences should support the topic idea by adding details, examples, definitions.
    3. Last sentence should give a conclusion about the idea.

III. Last Paragraph (CONCLUSION) lets the reader know what YOU have learned about the topic (Using 3rd person)

  1. Give final details about the main ideas used in the paper
  2. Give examples of how people can use information
  3. Write 1-2 sentences that share a final conclusion on the topic.

Typing your Review of Literature should be completed over several days.
